Patients with early stage breast cancers are commonly treated with surgery or surgery plus radiation, and radiation is widely believed to cut local recurrence rates by about half.
Now, researchers report that they have found that surgery plus radiation does cut local recurrences, but appears to increase the risk of invasive breast cancers later
"I don't want people to think radiation is bad," said study author Dr. Janie Weng Grumley, a fellow in breast oncology at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. "We know there is less recurrence with radiation."
Grumley's team evaluated 1,014 patients with early breast cancer, known as ductal carcinoma in situ. Of these, 651 had surgery alone while 363 had surgery plus radiation.
The 10-year probability of any recurrence at the same site was 30 percent for the surgery group and 18 percent for the combination group. However, when cancer does return in those who get the combination treatment, her study showed the patterns are different.
"The patients who got radiation recurred a lot later than the patients who didn't," she said. The average time to the cancer recurring in the same site was 7.5 years for those who had radiation plus surgery and 4.4 years for those who had surgery only.
However, "surgery plus radiation had more invasive recurrence," she said. Thirty-seven percent of the surgery group had an invasive recurrence at the same site, but 57 percent of the combination group did, she said.
While 28 percent of the recurrences were in different quadrants of the breast for the combination patients -- essentially new cancers -- only 10 percent of the recurrences in surgery-only patients were in new quadrants.
The survival rate among the surgery group at 10 years was 99.7 percent, compared to 98.3 percent for the combination group, the study found.
The study leaves many questions unanswered. "Is the radiation causing more new cancers?" Grumley wondered.
The research also has several limitations: The average follow-up for the surgery group was six years, while the average follow-up for the combination group was a little over nine years. "One could say the follow-up is longer, and maybe we would find the same thing if we followed the surgery-only group," Grumley said. The findings were slated to be presented Friday at the American Society of Breast Surgeons meeting, in Washington, D.C.
The finding should be considered very preliminary, said Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical and scientific officer for the American Cancer Society and professor of oncology and epidemiology at the Emory University School of Medicine, in Atlanta.
"I would say you have to look at all abstracts from scientific meetings with a grain of salt," Brawley said. The research has not yet been exposed to rigorous review and critique by the researchers' colleagues, he said. If a study is the first of its kind, it must be replicated by others to confirm the finding.
Grumley said the message for now is that women should be aware of the different patterns found. "Really, the message should be we should monitor these patients beyond the typical five years," she added.

Breast Cancer Coach and Motivational Speaker Hueina Su Demonstrates How Negative Thoughts Affect Emotional Stress and Body Strength
![]() |
| Breast Cancer Awareness Conference keynote speaker and life coach Hueina Su demonstrates the connection between negative thoughts and weak body strength. |
Breast Cancer Awareness Conference speaker and life coach Hueina Su keynotes to breast cancer survivors on connection of negative thoughts and emotions with stress on the body.
In a keynote address at a breast cancer awareness conference, motivational speaker and life coach Hueina Su helps one hundred breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers connect their negative thoughts and emotions with stress on their body.
“An average person has over 60,000 thoughts a day or one thought a second. Ninety-five percent of the thoughts are repeated from yesterday. Eighty percent of the repeated thoughts are negative,” Su said. “It’s important to recognize the fact that our thoughts affect our actions or inactions and perceived reality at a very deep subconscious level.”
Su demonstrated how negative thoughts affect a person’s strength using so-called muscle testing. It’s a method of applied kinesiology. “When you’re thinking positive thoughts, you are strong and able to resist externally applied force. Conversely, if you’re thinking negative thoughts, your strength starts to decrease,” Su said. “That’s a huge impact in your strength just by a change of thought. It’s a mind-over-matter, thought-over-body kind of phenomenon.”
“There are other forces that affect your level of stress. These invisible forces are the root causes of physical and emotional stress that I call “the invisible chaos.” They are invisible like electricity, but you can experience their effects. You have to learn how to tame your invisible chaos. Otherwise, you won’t have long-lasting stress relief,” Su said.
“Your thoughts are very powerful. Your thoughts turn into actions. Your actions become results. Your results are your reality. So mind your own thoughts,” Su said.
Since June 2010, Su has been leading a Mindful Wellness Coaching and Stress Management Program at Sparta Cancer Center in Sparta , New Jersey . Over 80 cancer patients and caregivers have participated and benefited from Su’s stress relief coaching program.
“The well-being of cancer caregivers and patient care staff is just as important as that of cancer patients. Having worked with cancer and other terminally ill patients as a registered nurse, I experienced first-hand the high level of stress and its negative impact on physical health and emotional well-being. This is why I wrote my best-selling book Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others,” Su said.

Breast Cancer Life Coach and Motivational Speaker Hueina Su Helps Breast Cancer Patients and Survivors Tame Their Invisible Chaos and Relieve Stress

Mindful wellness expert, inspirational speaker and life coach Hueina Su was the keynote speaker addressing the invisible chaos and root causes of stress to breast cancer patients and survivors at a breast cancer conference.
DENVILLE, NJ – April 16, 2011 – Coping with the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer is a very stressful journey for cancer patients and survivors, complicated by fears, anxiety, grief, and many emotional issues. Physical and emotional stress can wreck havoc in cancer patients’ immune function and healing process. Learning how to cope with stress effectively is critical for their recovery and emotional well-being.
In a keynote address at a breast cancer survivorship conference, inspirational speaker and life coach Hueina Su helps one hundred breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers identify their invisible chaos and root causes of stress and offers coping strategies to remain calm, peaceful and confident.
“Most conventional stress management techniques are important and beneficial, but they often provide temporary relief for the symptoms of stress, not the root cause of the stress,” Su says. “For example, yoga, massage, meditation are feel-good techniques. But stress will come back within an hour or two if the root cause of stress isn’t addressed.”
Su adds that this is why conventional stress management alone does not work. There are other forces that affect your level of stress, and in many cases, these invisible forces are the root cause of your stress. “I call these forces the invisible chaos. They are invisible like electricity, but you can experience their effects. You have to learn how to tame your invisible chaos. Otherwise, you won’t have long-lasting stress relief,” Su says.

Su pointed out eight common invisible chaos causing emotional and physical stress:
- I’m not good enough
- I’m not worthy
- Chronic people-pleasing
- Perfectionism
- Four fears, of success, failure, judgment, rejection
- Constantly comparing yourself
- Ghosts from the past
- Self-limiting beliefs

Breast Cancer Survivors Find Inner Peace and Confidence by Reclaiming Their Peaceful Power
Inspirational keynote speaker, best-selling author and life coach Hueina Su speaks on claiming peaceful power for self confidence, inner peace and unstoppable success at Empowerment Coaching Conference.
DENVILLE, NJ – March 25, 2011 – Lack of self confidence and inner peace is one of the root causes why many people experience overwhelm and chronic pain in their stressful lives. They pay for the consequences by their fears of failure, rejection and judgment.
Inspirational keynote speaker, best-selling author and certified life coach Hueina Su is on a mission to empower and help one million people change their negative limiting beliefs, claim their peaceful power, regain their self confidence, inner peace and achieve unstoppable success.
Su is a renowned expert in helping people restore the missing peace and balance in their stressful lives. She is a Mindful Wellness Expert, certified life coach, keynote speaker, and the best-selling author of Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others.
“I grew up as a painfully shy girl lack of self confidence and self esteem. There was invisible chaos overpowering me that governed my life for so long,” Su said. “I became an over-achiever, perfectionist and people-pleaser to compensate for my fears of failure, rejection and judgment.”
Su said, “Over the years, through my own trials and errors, diligent studies on my spiritual journey, and with the help of great mentors and coaches, I have learned how to tame my invisible chaos, and created inner peace, joy and success in my life. I’m finally at peace with who I am. And I’m on a mission to help other people to do the same.”
In a recent Empowerment Coaching Conference, Su shared her unique 3-R process to eliminate the root cause of stress and self-sabotage, claim peaceful power so that people can be calm, centered and confident for unstoppable success, long-lasting inner peace and true happiness.
The first “R” is “Recognize” meaning to identify one or more of the invisible chaos. “If you are not aware of the problem, you cannot find the solution,” Su said.
The second “R” is “Release” and it’s about reframing perspective, releasing the negative emotions, letting go and clearing negative energy.
“The last “R” is “Reclaim” where we reclaim and reconnect with our inner essence, who we truly are, in order to have true inner peace and long-lasting freedom from stress,” Su said. “What we need to reclaim is what I call My Inner Essence including five elements: My Inner Balance, My Inner Beauty, My Inner Wisdom, My Inner Purpose, and My Inner Power.”

Su commented, reclaiming your peaceful power is particularly important to those who are facing major challenges or setbacks such as cancer patients undergoing treatment, cancer survivors, business owners, women going through divorce or career transition.
“Cancer is one of the leading causes of death. Coping with diagnosis and treatment of cancer is a very stressful journey for cancer patients and survivors, complicated by fears, anxiety, grief, and many emotional issues,” said Su. “I have used the same 3-R process to coach cancer patients, cancer survivors and caregivers to help them navigate the cancer treatment journey and become more resilient and confident in dealing with cancer and other life changes in my Mindful Wellness Coaching and Stress Management Program at a cancer center.”
Su said, “Cancer patients and caregivers are very prone to stress and overwhelm. Research has shown that stress reduces immune function and interferes with the body’s ability to heal, so learning how to deal with stress effectively will help accelerate cancer patients’ recovery and improve their quality of life. Stress reduction and coaching have been found to improve cancer patients’ survival rates.”
“Having worked with terminally ill cancer patients as a nurse, I experienced first-hand the high level of stress and its negative impact on health and well-being. This is why I wrote my best-selling book Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others,” Su said.

Lift Weight to Beat Breast Cancer
If having a cancer, recovering from it or surviving it didn’t give you enough scare and motivation to start a regular exercise program, you’d better wake up and do it now,” says Carey Yang, a Certified Personal Trainer, fitness expert and president of Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC based in Denville, New Jeresy.
According to new guidelines published by Dr. Kathryn Schmitz of the University of Pennsylvania and her colleages, cancer survivors are urged to exercise even more than those undergoing treatment.
There are nearly 12 million cancer survivors nationwide. There is no positive proof yet that more active people may lower risk of a cancer recurrence. As with any aging people, the longer cancer survivors live, the better the exercise can help them fight rhe risk of heart disease.
In general, physical activity improves quality of life and eases some cancer-related fatigue. Regular exercise can minimize physical functioning from declining too quickly after the therapy.
Dr. Wendy Demark-Wahnefried of the University of Alabama at BirminghamIn says, “in one year, women who needed chemotherapy for their breast cancer can see a swapping of muscle for fat that’s equivalent to 10 years of normal aging. In other words, a 45-year-old may find herself with the fatter, weaker body type of a 55-year-old.”
The American College of Sports Medicine also issued guidelines this month advising cancer survivors to aim for the same amount of exercise as recommended for the average person – about 2 1/2 hours a week.
Yang offers his tips for cancer patients and cancer survivors as to how to start a regular exercise program to help them recover from cancer treatment quicker and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.
1.Consult your oncology doctor before starting an exercise program.
2. See a certified personal trainer or specialist who understand your conditions and your special needs.
3. Start slowly at lower intensity and shorter duration. Build it up progressively. Consistency is the key to success.
4. Never give up. There are many support services to help you.
